The Six Different Types of Skin and How to Care for Them

The Six Different Types of Skin and How to Care for Them

One of the biggest skincare mistakes people make is purchasing the wrong products for their skin type. Just like our personalities, our skin type is unique to us. The type of skin you have may not be like someone else’s and more importantly, the products that work wonders for one person may not work as well for you and your skin needs.

Knowing your skin type will make purchasing skincare a whole lot easier and will save you tons of dinero in the long run as you’ll know which products to incorporate into your beauty regimen and which to avoid. To help determine what kind of complexion you have, we’re sharing the six different types of skin, from normal to acne-prone, and some of the MOZ products we recommend you use to treat and tone.

Different Types of Skin

  1. Normal Skin

Ah, normal skin. A true (but rare) blessing.

This skin type is free of blemishes and contains pores that’re not as ghastly as Regina George’s. It also isn’t overly-sensitive and can handle many types of products. But do note that normal skin is NOT perfect skin. Perfect skin doesn’t exist (as much as we’d like it to). Having normal skin just means that your skin can maintain a fairly good balance on its own and creates enough sebum to keep it hydrated and healthy, without getting overly oily.

Do keep in mind that skin, like anything else in life, can change. If you have normal skin now, you may not have it that way for years to come. But keeping staple skincare products in your beauty regimen like SPF and anti-aging products like retinoids can help you maintain this type of complexion.

  1. Dry Skin

Dull, rough looking complexion? Red patches? Visible lines?

Okay, so how does one get into this dry, itch skin sitch? Dry skin can be the result of aging, over-exfoliating, frequent baking sessions under the sun, changes in temperature, continuous hot showers, drying cosmetic ingredients, or even using the wrong products. So, a lot of things.

And since dry skin doesn’t produce enough sebum to keep it hydrated, opting for products that contain hyaluronic acid and ceramides can help smooth and moisturize this dehydrated skin type. But also keep in mind that severely dry skin can result in eczema or psoriasis flareups and that sometimes, simple over-the-counter creams or lotions won’t do the trick. When dry skin becomes more concerning and difficult to manage, it’s best to seek the advice of a dermatologist.

  1. Oily Skin

The opposite of dry skin? Oily skin.

People with oily skin will have shiny complexions accompanied by enlarged pores, and may have blackheads and blemishes, too. And although dewy skin is all the rage right now, it’s not so fun when an overproduction of sebum is what’s causing it.

If your skin produces excess sebum, the chances of you breaking out are unfortunately a lot higher. But if your plan is to remove oil with drying products such as benzoyl peroxide, keep in mind that they may be far too aggravating and have the potential to make oily skin worse. However, products that contain low concentrations of oil and acne-fighting ingredients such as tea tree and salicylic acid are great alternatives and often improve this pesky skin condition. Also make sure that your skincare and even cosmetics are non-comedogenic as this’ll help reduce your chances of developing blocked pores and blemishes.

  1. Sensitive Skin

If your skin could talk, it’d say this…

Sensitive skin is classified by redness, itchiness, burning, and even dryness. And the easiest way to determine if you have this skin type is by test-patching products to see what your skin loves and what it absolutely detests.

It’s also important for people with sensitive skin to refrain from incorporating products that contain fragrances, dyes, parabens, and sulfates. So, the next time you’re purchasing your skincare, opt for more natural and gentle ingredients such as aloe vera and rose water. Your easily aggravated skin will thank you.

  1. Combination Skin

A lil’ bit of dryness. A lil’ bit of oiliness. That’s what combination skin is.

Those with combination skin often have cheeks that are dry and flaky and an oily T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin). And a great product to incorporate into your routine if you have this skin type is a soothing and calming natural-based toner, as it’ll help balance both the dry and oily parts of your face without further aggravating your skin and stripping it of its essential oils.

A good rule of thumb for those with a complexion such as this is to use products that don’t leave behind a greasy look and feel for the shinier parts of your skin and products that’re soothing and hydrating for the dehydrated areas of your face. That way, every inch of your face wins.

  1. Acne-Prone Skin

Last but certainly not least…wanted. Good ol’ acne-prone skin.

Okay, so some don’t really classify acne-prone as a skin type, but there are a lot of products that’re specifically formulated for acne-prone skin.

Simply put, acne-prone skin is skin that’s prone to developing acne, both non-inflammatory and inflammatory. The way you treat acne-prone skin depends on the type of acne you have. And if you have acne but are unsure what type, check our article all about the six types of acne here.
