How Can Witch Hazel Benefit your Skin?
We’re back with another ingredient spotlight blog, and this one is all about Witch Hazel! Found as an ingredient in our very own Hyaluronic Acid Serum, it’s definitely worth getting to know this skincare gem.
What is Witch Hazel?
Hamamelis virginiana or witch hazel is a shrub plant native to the United States. Indigenous populations have been using it as a remedy for centuries, primarily for helping skin inflammation and irritation.
Today you can easily find witch hazel in its pure form at any drug store or pharmacy, but more commonly found, are skincare products containing witch hazel. Although most popularly used as a natural substitute to harsh skin toners, witch hazel carries out the same benefits when it is found as an ingredient in other products. Witch hazel’s anti-inflammatory and anti-irritation benefits can be used to treat a list of skin-related conditions.
Benefits of witch hazel:
Because most forms of acne (like cysts and pustules) are inflammatory, witch hazel can be the perfect skincare ingredient for those who deal with pesky breakouts. It will reduce swelling and redness, and overall just sooth, and calm the skin. Not only can witch hazel calm down inflammatory acne, but it can also help non-inflammatory breakouts just as much!
Because of its astringent properties, witch hazel can dry out acne blemishes, and reduce bacteria build-up. In return, those properties, make the use of witch hazel perfect for reducing blackheads and whiteheads, as well as reducing the size of pores.
Fights Skin Damage
Being a plant, witch hazel is rich in a strong compound known as tannins. When this plant compound is applied topically to the skin, it acts as an antioxidant to protect your skin against damage. Tannins act as a barrier, to prevent any substances which may cause inflammation from entering your skin. Tests have shown witch hazel to be effective in neutralizing harmful radicals and even preventing the spread of skin cancer!
Tying into the astringent and protective properties of witch hazel is its ability to ward off infection! Those same tannins that prevent skin damage also carry antiviral effects against germs related to the common cold, HPV, and even herpes. With this being said, witch hazel is often applied to cold sores, cuts, and scabs to prevent infection.
So basically, witch hazel is a beast when it comes to skincare. It helps with inflammation, alleviates acne, prevents skin damage, and even fights infections! Incorporating witch hazel into your routine can be a total game-changer. To reap the amazing benefits of this skincare ingredient, we suggest using a witch hazel-based toner, or picking up witch hazel containing skin products such as our Hyaluronic Acid Serum!
