The Skin Care Benefits of Shea Butter

Shea butter: what’s the hype? Well, we’re here to tell you. Found in many moisturizers, creams, lotions and actually in some of our products too (like the Arabica Coffee Scrub 😉 ), this skincare ingredient is the holy grail of moisture.

Shea butter is a fat extracted from shea tree nuts. Most shea butter is sourced in West Africa, where shea trees are widely cultivated. In its natural state, shea butter is a thick and creamy ivory-colored solid paste. Once body heat is applied to it, shea butter melts into a liquid consistency and absorbs into the skin effortlessly. The butter’s high concentration of fatty acids and vitamins makes it the perfect cosmetic ingredient for natural skincare products with goals to soften and moisturize. The use of shea butter on the body (especially the face) helps condition, tone, and soothe the skin like nothing else. Now, lets run through just a few of the benefits of shea butter!

Anti-aging properties

Oleic, linoleic, and stearic are the three kinds of acids found in shea butter. The acid trio works hard to effectively fight oxidative stress (the result of environmental toxins contaminating your skin cells). That detoxifying effect allows for your skin to effectively turn over new cells, and helps tighten, and strengthen the skin. The high vitamin E content of shea butter also protects your skin from harsh UV rays from the sun. These properties together prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging like nobody’s business!

Emollient properties

The consistency of shea butter being semisolid helps the skin absorb the benefits of the ingredient that much more effectively, and deeply. The richness of the tree nut oils soaks into the deeper layers of the skin; making the moisturizing effect last several hours (which is much shorter than the average moisturizing lotion).

Anti-inflammatory properties

If you struggle with redness and inflammation of the skin, shea butter is your new best friend. A high concentration of vitamin K lets shea butter assist the body and skin to heal faster after being damaged, and is what gives shea butter it’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Needless to say, shea butter is a godsent moisturizer. It has anti-aging, emollient, and anti-inflammatory properties to give it’s users younger and nourished skin. However, using straight pure shea butter directly can irritate pre-existing conditions of the skin, so you want to try and go for shea-butter-containing products (insert Arabica Coffee Scrub here 😉 ) to prevent shocking the skin. Other than that, shea butter is your answer for all things moisture, and there’s no doubt why us and so many other brands chose it as a staple skincare ingredient
