Ten Tips and Tricks for Fighting Acne: From Changing Pillowcases to Cleaning Phones

Hey there! How’s it glowin’?

Okay, we know we’ve been on the topic of acne A LOT lately. So far, we’ve covered acne preventing and causing foods, how to fight COVID-19 mask acne, and the different types of acne that exist. We’ve even shared our favourite MOZ product picks to help banish blemishes.

But today, we’re going beyond sharing what and what not to ingest and the topical treatments to include in your skincare regime. Instead, we’re providing ten simple tips and tricks for fighting acne that require no change in diet or any pimple preventing purchases.

So, sit back, relax, and get ready to say au revoir to acne with this easy yet effective guide to help achieve spot-free skin!

  1. Change Your Face Towel

Every time you blow your stuffy nose, do you reach for the same used tissue? No. So don’t do the same with your face towel.

If you wash your face twice daily but then reach for a dirty towel to dry off, the entire process becomes counterproductive. An unclean towel can potentially cause breakouts due to all the bacteria that’s been left behind after multiple washes. And we’re not saying you need to change your face towel daily. If you switch out your towel on a weekly basis, you’re good to glow.

  1. Keep Your Hands Off Your Face

On your face is not the place… for your fingers to be.

Remember when you were a child and were told to keep your hands to yourself? Well, doing just that is imperative for adult skincare health.

Your hands are not always clean and they even contain natural oils, so touching your face with them can easily transfer unwanted dirt and debris to your skin. No bueno.

  1. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep deprivation can not only wreak havoc on your mind and body, but also on your skin.

When you don’t get enough rest, your skin’s moisture and pH levels decrease, which can result in a dehydrated, red, and spotty complexion.

Guess turning in early ain’t so bad after all…

  1. Change Your Pillowcase(s)

Throwing your face towel in the wash weekly? Do the same for your pillowcase(s).

Just like towels, pillowcases can harbor dirt, pollutants, oil, and dead skin cells. And we don’t know about you, but we don’t want to rest on something grimy while trying to count sheep.

  1. Rethink Your Haircare

Certain products for your hair can give your face a spotty scare!

If you’re finding that you’re breaking out on your neck, hairline, and back, perhaps your favourite haircare products are the culprit.

If you’re particularly acne-prone, be on the lookout for ingredients such as petroleum, silicone, and sodium lauryl sulfate in your shampoos, conditioners, and styling products, as they can cause irritation and potentially produce pimples.

  1. Keep Your Hair Off Your Face

Let’s be honest. Not all of us wash our hair daily. In fact, it’s not healthy to do so.

Like your hands, your scalp contains natural oils. If your hair is hanging in your face instead of being tied back, dirt, leftover dry shampoo, and residue from styling sprays can potentially transfer onto your skin, specifically your forehead and cheeks, causing breakouts.

  1. Clean Your Cellphone

Pick up the (sanitized) phone, baby, ooh (like, brrt).

It’s 2020. Cellphones are basically attached to our hips. You’re probably even on it now reading this. Or was just on it texting or scrolling through some social platform.

Your phone can get pretty darn gross after using it all day and for some, all night. To avoid transferring your finger and potential food grease (we’re not judging) onto your cellular device, cleanse your screen daily with some sort of antiseptic wipe.

  1. Take Cooler Showers

Oh, the power of a hot shower. But as much as they feel good, they can do a whole lot of bad for your skin.

We’re not suggesting you bathe in frigid-like temperatures. You’re not a polar bear. However, opting for lukewarm water once you’ve stepped into the shower is your best skin bet. When water is too hot, it has the potential to strip your skin of its essential oils, which can lead to dry, and/or red skin. Oh, and breakouts too.

  1. Put Ice on Your Skin

Skin not feeling so nice? Add a bit of ice!

If you’re trying to tame an inflamed pimple, taking a bit of ice and holding it to the infected area can reduce swelling. This natural remedy also helps remove dirt and oil and tighten up pores.

  1. Try and De-Stress

For number ten, our tip is to try and stay zen!

Unfortunately, stress can trigger a whole lot of unwanted things, and acne is one of them.

When you’re stressed, high levels of CRH (corticotrophin-releasing hormone), can bind to receptors in your sebaceous glands (without even asking… rude), causing your skin to go into oil production overload. The result? Some perky and puffy pimples.

To help unwind and keep acne at bay, cozy up with a cup of tea and your favourite book or go for a calming stroll in your neighbourhood. The possibilities are endless!

And that’s a wrap, folks! We hope you enjoyed reading about these acne-fighting tips and tricks just as much as we did sharing them. Keep this guide in mind the next time you reach for your cellphone or face towel! And who glows, these simple switches may just save your skin.
