Who still has a Halloween candy hangover? Just us? Yeah, we didn’t think so. Lucky for you, we’re here to make you feel a little bit better about those candy binges – more specifically, those chocolate binges. This superfoods blog is all about dark chocolate. You totally read that right – dark chocolate is full of awesome benefits and we’re here to tell you what they are. Sorry in advance for any involuntary drooling 😉
Dark Chocolate is Full of Antioxidants
Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are biologically active and function as antioxidants. One study showed that dark chocolate had more antioxidant activity, polyphenols and flavanols than any other fruits tested – including blueberries and acai berries!
Dark Chocolate Can Help Improve Heart Health
Flavanols, the main type of flavonoid in dark chocolate, have a positive effect on heart health. They help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart and brain. The flavanols in dark chocolate can also help make blood less able to clot, which reduces the risk of blood clots and stroke.
Dark Chocolate May Protect Your Skin from the Sun
The flavanols in dark chocolate can protect against sun damage, improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin density and hydration, which is music to our ears!
Dark Chocolate May Improve Brain Function
A study once showed that eating high-flavanol cocoa for five days improved blood flow to the brain. Cocoa may also improve cognitive function in elderly people with mental impairment. Who knew chocolate was out here doing the most!!
Even though dark chocolate has all of these amazing benefits, it doesn’t mean you should go cray – it’s still loaded with calories and super easy to overeat. We recommend eating a square or two after dinner of quality dark chocolate – one with 70% or higher cocoa content. And with that, we say, bon appetit!
