Meditation for Beginners
A popular resolution for 2019 is to be more mindful. We can all agree that life has its ups and downs, so how do we keep our mind healthy? Meditation is on the rise, and for good reason – it helps control anxiety, enhances self-awareness, reduces stress and promotes emotional health. If you haven’t yet tried meditation but are interested in working on your mindfulness, you’re in the right place. Below, we’ve outlined our favourite tips for meditation beginners – good luck and enjoy!
Just Do It
Oftentimes people get so caught up in the “how” they don’t get to the “do.” If you’re a beginner, don’t think too much about it. Sit or lie comfortably, breathe normally and pay attention to your breath and how your body is moving. Take note of your belly, your rib cage and your chest. If you feel your mind wandering, come back to your breathing. Do this for a couple minutes a day and boom, you’ve started a meditation practice that you can alter with time.
Develop a Compassionate Attitude
When your mind starts to wander, and it will wander, don’t beat yourself up about it. Acknowledge your thoughts as friends, as part of you – not as intruders. Allowing yourself room for imperfections in your daily meditation is a great way to improve your overall self-love.
Give yourself more than just a couple days to get into your new practice. Set a goal for yourself to stick with it for at least a month. This will give you enough time to try out different methods and understand what works best for you.
